Base Mountain Sports is a ski and snowboard rental company with seven locations in Colorado. The company emphasizes a smooth and seamless customer experience, from online booking to in-store equipment pickup and payment, in order to get the customer on the slopes faster.
Base Mountain Sports recognized the need to revamp their outdated website and streamline their checkout process. They sought a more visually appealing, trustworthy site to boost sales and rentals for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. They also wanted to carry over these improvements to their sister brand Virgin Island Ski Rentals, ensuring both brands could appeal to their target audience while streamlining back-end administration.

Objective
Design a seamless, upscale user experience that set Base Mountain Sports apart from competitors. Speed and efficiency in the rental process were top priorities, ensuring a seamless experience from the site to the store.
We are a Houston based studio, so we don't get to go skiing very often! The design process kicked off by learning about the culture of the region and sport, and the drivers of their clientele. This was a pleasant change of pace from the type of work we typically take on, and it was so much fun to dive in and learn about the ski and snowboarding industry, and then dig into the equipment rental industry and the key factors at play.
Then, we proceeded with mockups for key pages—the home, locations, equipment and rates, and booking pages. To ensure the site looked professional yet inviting, Base Mountain Sports’ in-house photography was paired with high-quality stock images. Clean typography, cool tones, and generous negative space were used to create a sleek, modern design.
Using WooCommerce as the backbone of the website, the project delivered a flexible, robust system that supported custom features like EasyRent integration for a smooth rental process. We developed a custom plugin to handle pushing rental data to the third-party platform via REST API integration and data mapping, enabling tailored rental packages and add-ons.
Redesigning Base Mountain Sports’ website was an exciting challenge. The project provided new insights into the ski and snowboarding industry while tackling complex technical hurdles like API integrations and scalable design customization. The end result was a polished, user-friendly site that increased the number of rentals year-over-year and overall improved the customer experience. By integrating the website with in-store operations, the project delivered a unified experience that ensured efficiency and convenience for customers, ultimately allowing them to get out on the slopes faster.
